Quick Tips: Ducting Fog and Haze

Ducting atmospherics lets you put the effect exactly where you want it while keeping the machine out of sight and easy to reach for settings and refills. It can also move machine noise away from the action. Here are a few tips to get the most out of your setup.

Size Matters ;)

Size your duct to the volume you’re moving. 6in works if space is tight, but 8in or larger gives you better flow and less moisture buildup.

Mind the Gap.

Keep the machine’s output at least 6 inches from the duct entry. The gap lets fog mix with air so it doesn’t condense back into fluid, and it lets the machine’s thrust draw in outside air for an extra push through the duct.

Material Matters.

Your ducting can be part of the show. In the past, we’ve routed fog and haze through exposed HVAC ducting that doubled as scenery. Try an exhaust pipe, a chimney, or a cauldron to sell the effect. For something more discreet, use black rubber ducting. Running low fog? Go insulated to hold the temperature. And it doesn’t have to be round; any shape works as long as it can handle the volume.

Long Runs and Tight Turns.

Long-distance relationships are hard. Long duct runs are harder. Every 90° bend slows down your effect’s momentum, so plan your angles carefully. For long runs or tight turns, add an inline fan to keep things moving, either tapped in through a Y-joint or mounted directly in line.

Residue Control.

Some residue is a given. With less air in the duct, atmospheric effects will condense back into fluid. Managing that becomes part of the plan. For vertical runs, add a drip tray to catch runoff and prevent slip hazards. For horizontal runs, drain the ducting after each use.

Bonus Round.

Add fans and evenly spaced outputs to your duct, and you’ve got yourself a “Tube of Death,” or a “Smoke Sausage” for our friends across the pond.

By the way, who is coming up with these names?!
