Knott’s Berry Farm is known for attractions that immerse guests in the action. To introduce new moments of surprise and atmosphere, the park partnered with Master FX to create automated fog effects for two of its iconic roller coasters: Jaguar! and MonteZOOMa.
The objective was not simply to add fog machines. Each effect needed to activate at precisely the right moment, blend naturally into the attraction, and operate reliably without creating an impractical maintenance burden. Meeting those requirements called for a complete, purpose-built effects system.
Transforming the Jaguar! Experience
On Jaguar!, automated fog effects transform the ride’s tunnels and Mayan temple finale. As the train enters the temple’s darkened sections and dives through the structure, sensors activate the effects using carefully programmed delays.
Fog engulfs the track while synchronized lighting cuts through the air, surrounding riders with movement, color, and atmosphere. The experience replaces earlier heat and fireball effects with an immersive combination of fog and light.
The visual impact becomes especially dramatic after dark, when the illuminated fog fills the tunnels and temple structure. What riders experience as a sudden, unexpected moment is the result of precise timing behind the scenes.
Building Atmosphere for MonteZOOMa
MonteZOOMa uses dramatic, sensor-triggered fog effects throughout the station and launch tunnel. The effects add anticipation as riders prepare to launch, transforming the surrounding space before the coaster accelerates down the track.
Carefully timed activation allows the fog effects to support the pace of the attraction. Each effect becomes part of the ride sequence rather than a separate visual element, helping build tension and excitement at one of the coaster’s defining moments.
Engineering Precise, Automated Effects
Master FX designed and built a complete system around Atlas upshot fog generators, sensors, and programmed delays, enabling effects to trigger from discreet locations throughout the attractions as each train reaches predetermined points along the rides.
The system’s timing is carefully coordinated with the movement of each train, delivering the effects consistently from one ride cycle to the next. For guests, the effects feel spontaneous. Behind the scenes, every activation is controlled and repeatable.
Solving the Fluid-Delivery Challenge
Fog generators installed so close to the action created an operational challenge. Many of the machines were placed in locations that would be difficult to access for routine fluid refills. Servicing each generator individually would require significant time and repeated maintenance within the ride environment.
Master FX addressed the challenge by engineering a custom remote fluid distribution system. Fog fluid is pumped from multiple 55-gallon drums through a network extending up to 200 feet, supplying the Atlas units without requiring individual manual refills.
The fluid network is integrated with a centralized control station that provides fluid-level and system-status alerts. Low-fluid sensors help prevent generators from running dry, protecting the equipment while supporting consistent operation.
