The brief: Make it snow inside a Great Wolf Lodge, show after show, with a family-friendly effect that appears from nowhere, fills the room and disappears without leaving a mess.
That challenge was part of The Legend of Luna, an immersive lobby experience created for Great Wolf Lodge. Developed with BRC Imagination Arts and integrated by TechMD, the show surrounds families with animated media, lighting, sound and physical effects as Luna, a young wolf, discovers the power of embracing what makes her different.
At the climax, winter moves beyond the screen. Snow begins falling inside the lodge and the audience becomes part of the story.
HIDE THE HARDWARE. KEEP THE MAGIC.
The effect needed to feel spontaneous. Guests should see snow, not the equipment making it.
The Perryville installation’s equipment list includes ten Master FX Solstice Modular Snow Systems. The machines were concealed inside architectural columns, leaving only the small delivery nozzles visible at the top.
This is where the modular part of Solstice earns its name. The machine, fluid supply and output point do not have to occupy the same visible space. Equipment can be positioned around the architecture while hoses and adjustable nozzles place the effect where the story requires it.
For Luna, that meant the technology could disappear into the lodge while the snowfall remained front and center.
SHAPE THE SNOW WITHOUT HEARING THE FAN
Producing snow is only part of the equation. Airflow determines where the flakes travel, how broadly they spread and how naturally they fall.
At several Legend of Luna installations, Master FX Force 8 fans were used to direct that airflow and shape the effect. This gave the integration team another level of control over how the snow moved through each lodge’s unique architecture.
Powerful fans often introduce an unwanted side effect: noise. In an immersive show built around narration, music and carefully timed dramatic moments, the audience should not hear an industrial fan ramping up just before the magic happens.
Unlike other fans that rely on a reduced-output mode to quiet down, Force 8 is engineered for nearly silent operation throughout its output range, delivering a no-compromise solution that never limits airflow.
That distinction matters in an experience like Luna. Force 8 can help move and shape the snow without competing with the soundtrack or announcing the effect before guests see it.
BUILT FOR THE NEXT SHOW ...AND THE ONE AFTER THAT
A snowfall effect in a permanent attraction has a different job than a machine used for a one-night event.
It must run consistently, fit into daily operations and be serviceable without interrupting the guest experience. The Luna system was designed around those realities, with monitored equipment and a pumping arrangement that automatically replenishes the remote snow machines.
That approach reduces the need to access individually concealed units for routine refilling. It also turns a collection of effects machines into a coordinated attraction system—one that can be operated repeatedly instead of rebuilt for every performance.

ONE SYSTEM BECAME MANY
The first system did more than prove the effect could work. It demonstrated that Master FX could understand the creative brief, collaborate with TechMD and Great Wolf Lodge, and engineer a solution around the realities of a permanent, guest-facing environment.
That first build established the trust that comes with partnering successfully on a project.
As The Legend of Luna upgrades expanded, one system became one of many supplied by Master FX for Great Wolf Lodge and TechMD. The relationship ultimately grew into supporting the effort to revamp Great Wolf Lodge properties across the portfolio.
Scaling an effect across multiple locations is not simply a matter of copying the original equipment list. Each lodge introduces different architecture, airflow, access points and operational requirements. The guest experience must remain consistent even when the buildings are not.
Master FX brought the same problem-solving approach to each system: listen first, design to the space and build equipment that the on-site team can operate and maintain long after commissioning.
The repeat business was not only a vote of confidence in the technology. It was evidence of confidence in the team behind it.
THE FLUID IS PART OF THE EFFECT
Great snow is about more than how much material comes out of a nozzle. Flake size, hang time, travel distance and evaporation all affect whether the result looks magical—or simply creates cleanup.
BRC’s Edward Hodge offered a direct explanation for the equipment choice:
The snow in The Legend of Luna was designed to dry before reaching the floor. Guests experience a convincing indoor snowfall without the accumulation and mess that could interfere with a busy resort lobby.
Solstice gives designers control over output and distance, making it possible to dial in anything from light flurries to a fuller snowfall. Combined with Master FX snow fluid, that control helps the physical effect linger long enough to be seen while disappearing cleanly afterward.
WHEN THE SCREEN CAN’T HOLD THE STORY
Throughout The Legend of Luna, animated snow and winter imagery establish the world on screen. The practical snowfall completes the illusion by crossing the boundary between the show and its audience.
Children can reach for it. Families can stand beneath it. The effect occupies the same space as the guests, turning a visual climax into a shared physical moment.
That is the purpose of custom effects integration. The equipment is important, but the equipment is not the experience. The goal is to make technology behave as part of the architecture, respond as part of the show and deliver the same moment reliably for every audience—at every property.

No two venues move air the same way. Ceiling height, audience position, architecture, access, show control and maintenance requirements all influence how a snow system should be designed.
