Singapore’s Changi Airport is celebrated for turning travel into an experience. Its combination of innovative architecture, lush gardens, and immersive environments creates moments of discovery throughout the airport.
To bring another layer of enchantment to the space, Master FX was commissioned to design, develop, and install a custom underground fog system. The objective was to produce low-lying fog at scheduled intervals while keeping the equipment and supporting infrastructure hidden from view.
Even though it is powered by a carefully engineered system below the surface, the result is an effect that feels naturally integrated into the environment.
Designing the Effect from the Ground Down
Creating fog across a large public environment requires more than placing individual machines throughout the landscape. The system needed to distribute fluid to multiple locations, coordinate effect timing, and preserve the visual integrity of the surrounding space.
Master FX collaborated with the project’s contractors and developers to plan the infrastructure around those requirements. This included establishing the conditions for a centralized pump room and control center that would serve as the operational core of the installation.
From this central location, fog fluid is pumped through a distribution network to custom fog units positioned remotely across the environment.
Concealing the Technology
The custom fog machines are concealed at ground level, allowing the fog to appear as though it is rising directly from the landscape. With the equipment hidden, the technology never competes with the experience it was designed to create.
At scheduled intervals, the system releases low-lying fog that moves through the surrounding gardens and architecture. The effect softens the environment, adds depth, and transforms familiar spaces into dreamlike scenes.

Centralized Control Across a Distributed System
Connecting the remote fog units to a centralized fluid distribution system gives the installation a unified foundation. Rather than treating each machine as an isolated effect, Master FX engineered the equipment, fluid delivery, and control components to operate as one coordinated system.
This centralized approach supports consistent fog delivery across multiple locations while keeping the supporting infrastructure organized away from public areas.
